Sarah was born on August 22nd, 1847.  Sarah's father was Samuel Bicknell and her mother was Martha Hooper.  Her paternal grandparents were John Bicknell and Mary Polly Hulen.  She was the fifth of twelve children.  She had six brothers and five sisters, named William, Thomas Simpson, Charles, John Wesley, Robert H., Joseph M., Mary A., Nancy E., Lucy E., Millie and Alice Deborah.  Nancy E. and Sarah were twins.
