Heberd was born on November 2nd, 1832.  Heberd's father was Mumford Bicknell and his mother was Nancy Ashby.  His paternal grandparents were John Bicknell and Mary Polly Hulen.  He was the eighth of twelve children.  He had nine brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Samuel, Alfred, Mumford Stokes, Austin, George Washington, David, Christina and Polly Ann.
