Austin was born on June 10th, 1837.  Austin's father was Mumford Bicknell and his mother was Nancy Ashby.  His paternal grandparents were John Bicknell and Mary Polly Hulen.  He was the tenth of twelve children.  He had nine brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Samuel, Alfred, Heberd, Mumford Stokes, George Washington, David, Christina and Polly Ann.
