Nancy was born in 1819.  Nancy's father was William Asbell and her mother was Alah Cecille Van Winkle.  Her paternal grandparents were William Asbell Sr. and Malinda Ross; her maternal grandparents were Benjamin Franklin Van Winkle and Allah (Cherokee Wife).  She was the fifth of thirteen children.  She had eight brothers and four sisters, named Wiley Benjamin, James, Joseph B., Ross, William, Daniel, Henry, Overton Terry, Elizabeth, Emily, Effie and Oleta.
