Daniel was born in 1826.  Daniel's father was William Asbell and his mother was Alah Cecille Van Winkle.  His paternal grandparents were William Asbell Sr. and Malinda Ross; his maternal grandparents were Benjamin Franklin Van Winkle and Allah (Cherokee Wife).  He was the eighth of thirteen children.  He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Wiley Benjamin, James, Joseph B., Ross, William, Henry, Overton Terry, Elizabeth, Nancy, Emily, Effie and Oleta.
