Edwin was born in 1926.  Edwin's father was Dennis Ira Abney and his mother was Norma W. Powell.  His paternal grandparents were William A Abney and Sarah Margaret Bicknell.  He is the fourth of five children.  He has two brothers and two sisters, named William, Ira, Sylvia and Mary Lou.  He has two half-brothers named Park and Howard.
