  • John Denman [alias Denham] was apprenticed ca. 1639 by his mother, widow Judith Smead, to a "Mr Batcheller of Sallem," and later owned land at Wenham, Essex Co, MA, which he sold to Samuel Porter before removing to Middelburg, Long Island, with the family of his cousin Joanna (Chamberlain) Betts, where he was living 1662.
    The spelling of his name in at least one Massachusetts record as Denham helps support the hypothesis that his parents were Henry Denham, gent., of Fulham, Middlesex, England, and his wife Judith.

    <<<<You are right about the printed sources. Have you ever run across the "Boston Transcript" brief notice on the DENMAN Family History which appeared in 1929? The column editor very elegantly puts down the theory that the DENMANs came from the Retford branch. I, myself, on trips to London from the 1970's, visited the Society of Genealogists several times, both in their present locations and the former. I have never found any evidence to link "our" DENMANs to the Retford branch.>>>*************************************************************book by betty pond snyder. this is what she has:I was looking for info on Christopher denman and this is what she sent me exactly: Christopher was the son of john denman IV and mary elizabeth williams. John was the son of john denman III and mary gano s/o john denman II ,s/o john denman and judith stoughton. Judith was a daughter of thomas stoughton and katherine,thomas was s/o francis stoughton and agnes, francis s/o edward stoughton and mary exhurst,edward s/o thomas stoughton and margaret,thomas s/o henry stoughton and johane, henry s/o thomas stoughton and christian. this was all according to this book.

The son of this worthy couple, by name John, sailed in the ship Dorset, via the Bermudas, to America in 1635. His destination was Boston, where Israel and Thomas Stoughton, brothers of Judith, resided. John Denman 1, of Dorchester, Massachusetts, was the original progenitor of the Denman family in America and he becamse the father of three sons, John, Philip and William.
