Jacob  was born on November 30th, 1832. Jacob 's father was Adolf Maandag (Timmerman) and his mother was Berendina Harmina Vleming.  His paternal grandparents were Jacob Maandag and Hendrica Welgemoed; his maternal grandparents were Frans Vleming and Gerritje Engelen. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Hendrik Frederik, Frans Patricius, Bernadus, Gerhard and Gerharda Hendrika.  He was the oldest of the six children.
