Jan was born on October 30th, 1746 in Hengelo.1  Jan's father was Henrik Jan Starink and his mother was Janna Egging. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Bernardus, Henricus, Berendjen and Berendjen.  He was the youngest of the five children.
