Gradus was born on October 31st, 1815 in Zelhem. Gradus' father was Berend Hendrik Bussink and his mother was Reinera / Reijnira / Reiniera Reuterink.  His paternal grandparents were Gradus / Gerhardus Bussink and Harmina Ratstake. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Harmen, Gart Jan, Gerhardus, Harmina, Maria, Berendina, Berendina and Gerharda.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 79 on March 10th, 1895 in Velswijk (Bronckhorst).
