Jan was born on April 4th, 1821 in Oosterhout.1  Jan's father was Wilhelmus (Willem) van Kempen and his mother was Jacoba van Bronswijk.  His paternal grandparents were Christiaan van Kempen and Maria Baltus; his maternal grandparents were Johannes van Bronswijk and Catharina Derksen. He had three brothers named Christiaan, Johannes and Theodorus.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 65 on September 23rd, 1886 in Valburg.2
