Maria was born on February 19th, 1835 in Angerlo (Zevenaar). Maria's father was Johannes Martinus Wiggers and her mother was Aleijda Weijs.  Her paternal grandparents were Hendrik Wiggers and Elisabeth Heijting; her maternal grandparents were Joannes Wilhelmus / Jan Willem Weijs / Weis and Maria Bloemendaal. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Kornelis, Johannes Wilhelmus, Elizabeth, Hendrika Willemiena and Aleijda.  She was the oldest of the six children.
