Jan was born on October 17th, 1779.

Jan's father was Gerbrand / Gerbrant Kaij and his mother was Trijntje Claas / Klaas. His paternal grandparents were Volkert Jorisz Kaij and Aafje (Germend) Gerbrands Nierop. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Volkert, Claas, Klaas, Gerbrand, Dirk, Guurtje / Gerritje, Aaftje, Trijntje and Trijntje. He was the youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 53 on January 16th, 1833 in Oterleek.¹
