Grietjen was born on February 14th, 1734.  Grietjen's father was Willem Toonk and her mother was Gerritjen. She had three brothers and two sisters, and also two siblings of unknown gender, named Jan, Jan, Gerrit, Grietjen, Aaltjen, Toonk and Toonk.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
