Jan was born on February 13th, 1701 in Hummelo. Jan's father was Evert Smeeinck / Smeink and his mother was Mechtelt Jansen Enserink. He had four brothers and a sister, named Derrik, Hendrik, Derrik, Christian and Aaltjen.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
