Jan was born on September 12th, 1680.  Jan's father was Berend Hendriksen Rerink (Hesselink) and his mother was Aeltien Berents Cremer.  His paternal grandparents were Henrick Henricksen Hesselink and Fenne Fockink; his maternal grandparents were Berent Jansen Cremer and Heijle Henricks Wiemelink. He had two brothers named Willem and Hendrik.  He was the youngest of the three children.
