Gart was born on February 16th, 1816 in Winkelshoek. Gart's father was Jan Nieuwenhave and his mother was Wesseltjen Toonk.  His paternal grandparents were Arnoldus Nieuwenhave and Lijsken Nieuwenhuijs; his maternal grandparents were Joost Toonk and Harmina Beeftink. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Arnoldus, Hendrik Jan, Derk, Herman Jan, Leydina, Leidiena and Hendrika.  He was the third oldest of the eight children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Willem, Herman Jan and Gerharda.  He died at the age of 37 on March 17th, 1853 in Velswijk (Bronckhorst).
