Elsken was born on May 8th, 1740 in Varsseveld (Gld).  Elsken's father was Jan Kolenbrander and her mother was Geertje Harterink. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Gerrit Jan, Wilhelm, Hendrik, Lambert, Liesken, Berendje, Johanna and Willemina (Willmina).  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
