Evert Jan was born on August 21st, 1837 in Ambt Doetinchem (Doetinchem). Evert Jan's father was Evert Jan Kip and his mother was Johanna Wentink.  His paternal grandparents were Evert Kip and Dirkse Peereboldt. He had a brother and two sisters, named Arent, Alberdina and Aaltje.  He was the oldest of the four children.
