Gerrit Jan was born on February 14th, 1779 in Varsseveld. Gerrit Jan's father was Harmen Hoftijzer and his mother was Hendrina Schuurman.  His maternal grandparents were Barend Schuurman and Hendrina Klein Hesselink. He had a brother and a sister, named Hendrik Jan and Aaltjen.  He died at the age of 71 on October 27th, 1850 in Wisch (Oude IJsselstreek).
