Mechteld was born on November 17th, 1713 in Doesburg. Mechteld's father was Bartolomeus Gloebenstein (Kloekensteijn / Groesenstein / Kloekenstein) and her mother was Anneken Driessen. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Barent, Barent, Geesje  and Megtild.  She was the second youngest of the five children. She had three half-sisters named Anneken, Aleida and Anna.
