Jan was born on May 29th, 1723 in Zelhem. Jan's father was Garrit Garritsen / Gerritsen and his mother was Hendersken.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Garritsen and Vrouw / Moeder. He had three sisters named Baerendina, Jantien and Agnies.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
