Aalbert was born on March 8th, 1818 in Zelhem. Aalbert's father was Berend Bulten and his mother was Willemina Miggelbrink.  His paternal grandparents were Aalbert Bulten and Janna Garvelink; his maternal grandparents were Steven Miggelbrink and Dersken Loverink. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Gerrit Hendrik, Gerrit Willem, Gerrit Willem, Zwaantjen, Johanna, Derse and Jenneken.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
