Jan's father was Garrit / Gerrit Berkelder and his mother was Elisabeth / Elisabet Nienhuis (Nijenhuis‏‎ / Nijenhuijs).  His maternal grandparents were Harmen, Hermen, Hendrik Nijenhuis and Vrouw / Moeder (Jenneke ?). He had two brothers and five sisters, named Harmen, Gerardus, Johanna, Johanna, Jenneke, Jenneken and Gerarda Willemina.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
