Garrit was born on January 30th, 1796 in Zelhem. Garrit's father was Jan Bannink and his mother was Lammertjen Priesterink.  His paternal grandparents were Gerrit Bannink and Evertjen Bannink; his maternal grandparents were Hendricus Priesterink (of Grootwanninkhage) and Wesseltjen Klaapsink. He had a sister named Hendrika.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 31 on June 24th, 1827 in Zelhem (Bronckhorst).
