Jan was born on November 3rd, 1771 in Watergang, Landsmeer.1   Jan's father was Claas / Klaas Cornelisz van Neck / Nek and his mother was Grietje Cornelis de Groot.  His paternal grandparents were Crelis / Cornelis Claassen van Neck and Trijntje Jans; his maternal grandparents were Cornelis de Groot and Vrouw / Moeder. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Cornelis, Jacob, Sijmen, Trijntje and Maritje.  He was the third youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Sijmen and Maretje.
