Jacobus was born on April 25th, 1843 in Hoorn.1  Jacobus' father was Willem van der Sel (Zel) and his mother was Immetje Otte.  His paternal grandparents were Pieter van der Zel (Sel) and Judith de Haan; his maternal grandparents were Johannes (Johannis / Hannes / Hannis/ Hannes) Otte and Berendina (Barendje) Pot. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Pieter, Johannes, Johannes, Maria and Bardina.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 55 on March 31st, 1899 in Spanbroek.
