Burger was born on November 21st, 1797 in Hoorn.1  Burger's father was Willem van der Zel / Sel and his mother was Willemina / Wilhelmina Burger (Burgers).  His paternal grandparents were Hermen / Harmen van der Cel (Sel / Zel) and Lijsbet / Lijsje Dorsman; his maternal grandparents were Philip Burger and Marigje Vriliks. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Hermen, Pieter, Maria / Marijtje and Elisabeth.  He was the youngest of the five children.
