Dirk was born in 1829 in Hoogkarspel.  Dirk's father was Maarten Ruijter and his mother was Trijntje de Haan.  His paternal grandparents were Dirk Maartense / Maartensz Ruijter and Antje Outjers / Outjes Schoof; his maternal grandparents were Cornelis den Haan and Trijntje Melis. He had a brother and three sisters, named Cornelis, Trijntje, Antje and Maartje.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 68 on March 27th, 1897 in Westwoud.
