Pieter was born on May 1st, 1814 in Meppel.1  Pieter's father was Gerrit Otten and his mother was Hendrikjen / Henderkien van Hesselingen.  His maternal grandparents were Derk van Hesselingen and Bartha Jans Bakker. He had two brothers and a sister, named Derk, Hendrik Jan and Henderkjen.  He was the youngest of the four children.
