Jan was born on June 19th, 1816 in Hoorn and his baptism took place there on June 19th, 1816.1  Jan's father was Johannes (Johannis / Hannes / Hannis/ Hannes) Otte and his mother was Berendina (Barendje) Pot.  His maternal grandparents were Pieter Pot and Immetje / Jemmetje Frederiks / Vrederiks Anthonis. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Jurje, Petrus, Jan, Johannes, Evert, Ernst, Immetje and Marijtje.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
