Jan was born on January 11th, 1765.  Jan's father was Cornelis Maartensz Kok and his mother was Trijntje de Groot / Jans van Dam / Jansze.  His paternal grandfather was Maarten (Martinus?) Kok; his maternal grandfather was Jans van Dam. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Maarten, Louris, Louris, Jannetje  and Klaasje.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
