Jan was born on March 9th, 1727 in Westzaandam.  Jan's father was Jacob Claasz Heijn and his mother was Trijntje Claas.  His paternal grandfather was Claas Heijn. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Claas, Dirk, Claas Pietersz. and Duijfje.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
