Jacob was born in 1827 in Ursem.  Jacob's father was Jan Hartog and his mother was Elisabeth / Elizabeth / Lijsbet Maars.  His paternal grandparents were Jacob Hartog and Marijtje Luijtjeshof; his maternal grandparents were Gerrit Maars and Cornelisje Oud. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Jan, Cornelia, Marijtje, Aaltje, Aaltje, Neeltje, Jacoba, Gerritje and Gerritje.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 69 on March 13th, 1896 in Oterleek.
