Jan was born on January 24th, 1817 in Wijdenes and his baptism took place there on February 2nd, 1817.  Jan's father was Klaas Jansz Eilander and his mother was Diewertje / Duwertje Dirksd Bruin / Bruijn.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Klaasz Eilander and Geertje / Guurtje Pietersd Langenberg / Langeberg; his maternal grandparents were Dirk Cornelisz Bruin / Bruijn and Lijsbet Klaas / Claas Coster / Koster. He had a sister named Lijsbet.  He was the older of the two children.
