Gerrit was born in May 1748.  Gerrit's father was Jan Pietersz Coster and his mother was Aafje Gerrits Groenveld.  His paternal grandparents were Pieter Jansz Coster and Neel / Neeltje Pieters; his maternal grandparents were Gerrit Groenveld (Groenvelden) and Aafje Jans. He had six brothers and a sister, named Pieter, Cornelis, Claas, Jan, Henricus, Dirk and Geertje.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
