Maria was born in 1737 in Stellenbosch, South Africa.  Maria's father was Gideon de Wege and her mother was Maria Vermeulen.  Her maternal grandparents were Dirk Corneliszoon Vermeulen and Jannetjie Hansen. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Anthonie, Frederik, Johannes Gideon, Jacobus, Dirk, Johannes, Christina, Geertruij Abigael, Anna and Rosa.  She was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
