Machteld was born in 1795 in Swellendam, South Africa.  Machteld's father was Jan Abraham Botha and her mother was Hester Pietersen. She had a brother and six sisters, named Willem, Elsje Catharina, Anna Fredrika, Elsie Catharina, Catharina Geertruyda, Hester Jacoba and Johanna Elizabeth.  She died at the age of 58 on July 1st, 1853.
