Leslie was born on February 17th, 1894 in Norwood, Adelaide, SA.¹

Leslie's father was Robert Edwin Walter MAY and his mother was Margaret May CHARLTON. His paternal grandparents were William Henry MAY and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were William CHARLTON and Hannah HEWETT. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Charles, Reginald, Frank, William, Walter, Alfred, Robert, Isabell, Nellie, Doris and Florence. He was the fourth youngest of the twelve children. He died as a war casualty at the age of 23 on April 11th, 1917 in France.²
