Stanley, known as The Professor, was born on September 14th, 1907 in Leyton.  The Professor's father was Ernest George DOWNING and his mother was Alice Eliza GOULDEN.  His paternal grandparents were George DOWNING and Sarah Ann CARTER; his maternal grandparents were Richard GOULDEN and Elizabeth. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Tim, Ernest, Beatrice, Lily, Dot, Dinks and Flo.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 75 on March 30th, 1983 in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.
