Evelyn Delores Stearns, age 93 of Athens, New York, passed away suddenly at her home on Monday, December 31, 2012. Born on June 9, 1919, in Patterson, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Viola (Lott) Parks. Her sisters Mary, Grace, Ruth and brother Charles predeceased her.
She was married June 8, 1939, in Saugerties to Charles Russell Sterns, who predeceased her March 1976. Survivors include her sons Charles J. (Anne) Stearns of Northport and Ronald R. Stearns of Esperance, her daughters Frances E. Matter of Coxsackie, Dolores M. Gordon of Coxsackie, Jeanie (Anthony) DelVecchio of Earlton and Nancy S. (Rick) Pratti of Haverhill, MA; also 20 grandchildren, 15great-grandchildren (and one on the way), and one great-great grandchild (and two on the way).
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Evelyn enjoyed times with her family, reading, and traveling. A member of First Reformed Church and a resident of Athens for many years, she had been employed at Kadin Bros. Pocketbook Factory and Atlantic Knitting Mill and also assisted her husband Charles with trucking of U.S. mail and newspaper publications. She was retired from Bureau of Vital Records at the NYS Dept. of Health in Albany.
Calling hours will be held at Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon Street, Athens, NY, on Friday, January 4, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at Richards Funeral Home, Athens. Interment will follow in the family plot next to her late husband Charles Russell Stearns who predeceased her in March 1976 in The Catskill Town Cemetery.
