This Nicholas ended up a millionarie.  He was one of the founders of the Winnapeg Grain Exchange and later was a partner in the Northern Elevator Co., which was one of the largest companies in the West.
During the Great Depression, the Balfes lost all thier money, but neither catherine nor Nicholas were alive to see their fortune crumple.

12. Nicholas3 Balfe (Nicholas2, Edward1) was born 15 July 1849 in Ontario,
and died 1914. He married Catherine Madden 1877 in Almonte, Ontario,
daughter of John Madden and Ann. She was born 15 July 1855 in Ontario, and
died November 1918.

Fr Dan Ryan provided baptism of Nicholas Balfe, son of Nicholas Bolf and
Catherine Kealy born 15 July 1849 baptized 22 July 1849. Sponsors; James
Loeman & Bridget Foster. From St Francis de Sales RC parish Smith Falls
Ontario.
1871 census lists Nicholas Bawlf, age 22, born Ireland, single, living with his
parents.
He had trained as a moulder in a Smith Falls Ontario foundry but found the job
boring.
He and his wife moved to Winnipeg where he founded the Bawlf Grain Elevator
Company. By 1910 his name was listed in the Winnipeg Telegram as one of the
nineteen millionaires in the city. He was one of founders of the Grain Exchange
in Winnipeg and later a partner in the Northern Elevator Company.
Before 1878 moved to rural Manitoba. {See 1901 census the ages and birth
places of their children.
1881 census lists N. Bawlf, 29, married, Produce Dealer, born Ontario, Roman
Catholic, living with his wife, Catherine Bawlf and family in Winnipeg, Selkirk,
Manitoba. Living with him were his brother Dennis Bawlf, 26, and Ricahrd
Briscoll, 21 and Thomas Ward, 25.
1890-1892 moved from rural Manitoba to urban Manitoba. {See 1901 census
details.}
1901 census (Film T-6435, Winnipeg, Ward #2, District #12, Sub-district b-9,
Schedule 1, pages 8 & 9) lists Nicholas Bawlf, Head, married, born July 15,
1849 in rural Ontario, 51, R Catholic, Grain Merchant, living with his wife,
Katherine Bawlf and family in Winnipeg Manitoba, There were two domestics,
Mary Sharkey, 14 & Sarah Dunne, 27, along with Nicholas, 15 & Thomas, 13,
Bawlf, living with them. The Bawlf boys were listed as Boarders, born in urban
Manitoba and attending school for 10 months. The relationship of these Bawlf
boys to the family of Nicholas & Katherine Bawlf is not clear.
Notes for Catherine Madden:
1881 census lists Catherine Bawlf, married, 27, born Ontario, Roman Catholic,
living with her husband, N. Bawlf and family.
1891/95. See notes on her parents. She was living in Winnipeg Manitoba.
1901 census lists Katherine Bawlf, wife of Nicholas Bawlf, born Jan 9 1855 in
rural Ontario, 46, R. Catholic, living with her husband and family.
