Dielman Kolb

  • The rulers of the Palatinate area were somewhat more lenient to the Anabaptists than some other areas. However they kept close watch on them and imposed many regulations. They took a census of the Mennonites regularly between 1664 and 1793. One of these census in Wolfsheim where Dielman Kolb Sr. and his family lived was taken 8 December 1685. The census taker was expected to comment on the Mennonites and this was his report. "Tielmann Kolb, wife, 5 sons, 2 daughters. He and his wife are neighborly, but, at the same time, he is malicious and, therefore, is not regarded as irreproachable."
    
           The census taker in Wolfsheim sums up his report as follows. "The Anabaptists are very detrimental at this place because they don't take office and don't share food with the other subjects (or the people of the village). In a seductive manner, they have the advantage together with their relatives and keep it, while the others will be ruined."
    
           DIELMAN KOLB SR. later became a Quaker. he was a wine maker by trade and a preacher at Mannheim. He assisted preacher Jacob Schnebelli in the 1710 flight of Swiss Anabaptist refugees on their way down the Rhine River to the Palatinate.
