Edward was born on February 13th, 1653 in Corstorphine, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Edward's father was John Yearstoun (of Corstorphine) and his mother was Agnes Cleghorne. His paternal grandparents were John Yorstone and Janet Rodger; his maternal grandparents were John Cleghorne and Isobell Wilsone. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, John, Robert, George and Helen. Edward and Robert were twins.-
