Charles' father was William Woods and his mother was Susanna Clarke. He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Henry, George, John, Anthony Frederick, Eliza, Susanna, Laura, Jane Octavia, Frances and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.
