Janet Chalmers was born in 1876 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. Janet Chalmers' father was James Watson and her mother was Janet Chalmers Tod. Her paternal grandparents were George Watson and Elizabeth Hancock; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Tod and Helen Lister. She had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Thomas Tod, James, Helen Lister, Elizabeth Hancock, Mary Hawthorn and Margaret Oswald. She was the third youngest of the eight children.-
