Robert's father was Andrew Wallace and his mother was Jane (Jean) Robertson Sinclair. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Wallace and Elisabeth Brown; his maternal grandparents were Robert Sinclair and Marion Robertson. He had two brothers named William and John. He was the second oldest of the three children.
