Thomas was born on September 2nd, 1827 in Lancashire, England.  Thomas' father was William Ross and his mother was Jane Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were James Ross and Cathrine Caton; his maternal grandparents were Nicholas Robinson and Elizabeth? Betty Unknown. He had a brother and two sisters, named James, Cathrine and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the four children.
