Alexander was born on September 6th, 1820 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. Alexander's father was Alexander Reid and his mother was Christian Low.  His paternal grandparents were Unknown Reid and Unknown; his maternal grandparents were George Low and Christian Russell. He had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Unknown, George Low, David, Christian, Elizabeth, Agnes and Christina.
