John Soutar was born on April 15th, 1817 in Tealing, Angus, Scotland. John Soutar's father was Peter Nicholson and his mother was Barbara Craik.  His paternal grandparents were Adam Nicholson and Jean (Jane) Taylor. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert, James, Peter, Janet, Mary and Isabell. He had an adopted brother named John.
